The terminus of the Royal Road was Sardis, in modern Turkey. In antiquity Sardis was the capital of the Lydian empire and, after the Persian conquest, a satrapal capital of the Achaemenid kings. This talk will survey the city of Sardis in the Lydian and Persian periods, and cover some of the new discoveries and speculations about the changes the city underwent during this profound transition.
Part III of Persepolis and the Persian Royal Road: an all-day symposium celebrating the recent Ancient Art acquisition of an Achaemenid Persian relief of a gift bearer at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
Reception to follow symposium. All participants are welcome.
Wine for the reception donated by Darioush, Napa, California.
