In the Roman period some Egyptian mummies started being furnished with vivid Graeco-Roman style ‘individual portraits.' Art historians have long been uncertain whether these mummies should be regarded as works of Roman art, or products of traditional Egyptian funerary practice. A careful analysis of some of the best surviving mummies suggests a new answer to this long-standing question.
