2:00‒3:20 pm:
This lecture discusses the making and reception of Polykleitos’s famous Doryphoros (Spear Bearer) in the collection of the Ludwig-Maximilians University. An exceptional piece of sculpture, the statue is a reconstruction of the lost bronze statue made by the Greek sculptor, Polykleitos, around 440 BC. Unknown to most, a memorial with the Spear Bearer was set up in 1921 in the centre of the University’s main building in memory of the 1,026 university members, who fell in the Great War (WWI). Although the memorial itself was destroyed in World War II by US bombs, the Spear Bearer miraculously survived and was later re-erected on campus. Its former memorial context, however, has been conveniently forgotten.

3:20‒3:30 pm:
Intermission (to allow time for audience to come and go)

3:30‒5:00 pm:
Join us for a dramatic poetry reading by actor Marton Csokas, featuring poems by Italian poet and writer Gabriele Tinti and inspired by classical sculpture. The poet will also present videos of his poetry performed in other museums and will be available for Q&As. This performance is cosponsored by the Italian Cultural Institute. Ancient Art Council would like to thank Paolo Barlera at the ICI and both Gabriele Tinti and Marton Csokas for making this possible.
