Poetry Reading and Discussion: Dr. Merrill completed his work on the two great works we attribute to Homer. Since the same meter and formulaic systems are used for both epics, even readers with no knowledge of Greek can experience them in the way the ancient Greeks did, as belonging to a unified tradition of epic song. Through discussion and selected readings, the translator will show why the oral and musical aspects of the Iliad are integral to an understanding of the epic.
Book signing in the de Young Bookstore after the lecture.
