The English traveler Edward Dodwell and the Italian artist Simone Pomardi toured Greece in 1805‒1806. Together they drew 1,000 pictures of Greece while it was still part of the Ottoman Empire, in the last years before it became an independent state. Most of these watercolors and drawings are now in the care of the Packard Humanities Institute. This illustrated lecture will introduce the collection and its place in our understanding of the antiquities of Greece.

This lecture is part of the Gods in Color: Polychromy in the Ancient World exhibition lecture series. The exhibition opens at the Legion of Honor on Saturday, 28 October 2017 and closes on Sunday, 7 January 2018.
