Ever since its discovery, Petra has remained the crown jewel of ancient Jordanian art and archaeology. Yet the dynamic centuries that came before Petra have received less attention from the public. This illustrated lecture explores the art and archaeology of Jordan’s Iron Age societies — the Moabites, Edomites, and their neighbors in northwest Saudi Arabia. The speaker will examine notable works of art as well as new discoveries from his archaeological excavations at the Moabite capital, Dhiban, and the Edomite capital, Busayra.
This lecture is cosponsored by the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology.
