The images in late thirteenth- to early fourteenth-century Byzantine churches of military saints depict them wearing only one shoe (monosandali). These figures are known from ancient mythology and primary sources, such as Thucydides’ History of the Peloponnesian War. The speaker will elaborate on the meaning of these half-shod military saints to the medieval Greeks. This particular iconography added a sense of instability and flux creating a suitable environment for the contemplative practices of the monks meditating upon them.
