Both the Legion of Honor and de Young are open to the public. Please read our safety guidelines.
In the early twentieth century, antiquities were considered vital to the collections in an art museum. Alma Spreckels was well aware of that, and the Legion of Honor’s display of ancient art grew with gifts from her friends and family. This was the beginning of what was to become the Fine Arts Museums’ substantial collection from the ancient world.
This program is part of the Legion Lecture Series: A Closer Look celebrating the Centennial of the Legion of Honor. The Legion will turn 100 on 11/11.
The lecture is cosponsored by the Ancient Art Council.
