Beginning in the 6th century BC, the Achaemenid dynasty established an empire that brought a flourishing civilization to the Near East and beyond. This culturally diverse monarchy created outstanding monuments that reflect the vast fortunes of the empire. The lecture will focus on the fineness of the sculpture adorning the massive walls of the palace complexes in Persepolis, as exemplified by the museum’s recently acquired Persian relief.

Part I of Persepolis and the Persian Royal Road: an all-day symposium celebrating the recent Ancient Art acquisition of an Achaemenid Persian relief of a gift bearer at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

Reception to follow symposium. All participants are welcome.

Wine for the reception donated by Darioush, Napa, California.
