This lecture explores some new ideas about public representational programs of Augustus Caesar and strategies in understanding and reading Augustan imagery as a dynastic narrative glorifying the emperor and his extended family. The importance of Augustan architectural alignments of monuments is also discussed in light of the possible location of the lost tomb of Julius Caesar. Later emperors, most notably Hadrian, linked into the Augustan past by locating their own monuments on pre-existing architectural alignments.
