The state of the heavens as indicative of the fortunes and misfortunes of humankind is an ancient system rooted in Babylonia and cuneiform scientific culture. From the second century BCE, this Babylonian astral science spread west to Egypt, Greece and Rome, and east to India, eventually transforming within the Greco-Roman world into one of, if not the centrally important premodern science. This lecture will summarize the history of Babylonian astrology and its relevance for the history of science.
