This talk will present highlights of recent excavations in the Sanctuary of Zeus at Nemea in Greece. The focus will be on the prehistory and early history of the area when ritual action developed on and around a constructed and managed landscape. The artificial landscape was created for hero worship and a physical connection to ‘imagined’ chthonic forces and the heroic past. This analysis is based on research by the Nemea Center for Classical Archaeology (UC Berkeley) during the just concluded ‘virtual season’—

an example of archaeology during Covid-19.
