Black-Figure Amphora

Greek, Athens, 530–520 B.C.

In the vigorously painted, complex main scene, warriors, who may represent the Homeric heroes Ajax and Odysseus, dispute the claim to the arms of Achilles.  The depiction of Dionysos , god of wine, on the other side suggests that this very fine, lidded amphora, attributed to a painter in the Leagros Group, might have been used to store wine.
