Statue of Asklepios

Greek, Hellenistic period, 2nd century B.C.

Asklepios was the Greek god of medicine and patron of physicians.  The contrasting directions representing the planes of the body and the strong folds of the drapery produce an elegant spiral twist and convey a sense of movement.
