Red-Figure Pelike

Greek, Athens, ca. 450 B.C.

The Spreckels Painter of this lovely pelike was named after the founder of the Legion of Honor, Alma de Bretteville Spreckels.  The main scene shows Leto standing behind the twin deities, her children by Zeus, Apollo (with a kithara) and Artemis (pouring wine into her brother's drinking cup).

Last Supper in Pompeii: From the Table to the Grave

This exhibition reveals how, before Mount Vesuvius blew up in AD 79 and rocked the Bay of Naples, people in Pompeii and nearby farms and villages were engaged in typical daily activities, many of which revolved around food and drink.
